Developing New Nursing Leaders - 2014

This is the fourth article in a series on leadership, coordinated by the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE).
 
All nurses have the potential to be leaders. Nurse managers can help to nurture their ability by providing individualized coaching and by supporting a unit structure and culture that encourages shared responsibility and collaboration. In this setting, nurse managers can often engage nurses in the professional development process before they even identify their own leadership potential.

 

The Initiative on the Future of Nursing

The Initiative on the Future of Nursing is rooted in the recommendations of the 2010 landmark report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). Through the Initiative, RWJF continues to support the research agenda set forth by the report and implement the recommendations in the areas of nurse training, education, professional leadership, and workforce policy.

BACKGROUND: Senior/experienced nurse leaders at the executive level are able to influence the work environment of nurses and institutional and health policy. Their development needs are likely to reflect this and other contemporary healthcare issues and may be different from middle and frontline managers.

Public Health Nursing Leadership Development in Canada - 2013

This report includes a literature scan and a pilot survey of the Community Health Nurses of Canada (CHNC) Board members and members of CHNC standing committees. The literature scan describes leadership issues and leadership development opportunities for public health nursing leadership. The survey includes examples of leadership development opportunities with respect to health equity and the social determinants of health (SDoH) experienced by CHNC members of the Board and its standing committees.
